BuffaloThrive Despite Harsh Storms
(From the Rapid City Journal)
Sandyand Jacki Limpert's ranch, on the southwest edge of the Slim Buttes, sat at the epicenter of the raging blizzards that slammed northwest South Dakota this spring.
Like their Harding County neighbors, they battled cold and snow all winter. Unlike their neighbors who raise cattle and sheep, the Limperts did not worry about livestock deaths.
They raise buffalo.
Despite receiving 125 inches of snow over the winter and being blasted by spring storms during calving, the Limperts have not lost one animal.
"Our calves look great, the cows look great," Sandy Limpert said. "I haven't found one dead calf. This is the kind of winter that the buffalo just really shine in."
The Limperts are typical of buffalo ranchers in the region, according to Karen Conley, executive director of Dakota Territory Buffalo Association, based in Rapid City.
